Why Relationships are Important for Your Happiness and Well-Being?
Our family and friends are amazing. They help us get through the good, the bad, and the ugly. Did you know that having a good social network contributes to your happiness and well-being?
According to Dr. Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness, the human species is a social mammal that thrives off of being connected to others and included in a social group. In fact, this social group is more likely to help us enjoy longer lasting moments of happiness than having all the money in the world. That’s not to say that money isn’t important, money is a tool that is needed for survival in the outer world. An abundance of money can help give us freedoms to spend more time doing the things we enjoy most, with those we love. But money can’t feed the soul within, it can’t replace that warm fuzzy feeling of a deep connection with others. Check out this video on happiness from Dr. Daniel Gilbert.
The key is to surround yourself with people that have your best interest in mind. These people are positive, nurturing, caring, loyal, and loving. They are the people that will answer your phone call at 3 am when you have an emergency and need help.
Tips for Staying Connected in a Digital World
Still, even though we have this great need to be social, as we evolve as a society and technology gets more advanced, we have become more distant and individualist. We no longer need to get up and go to somebody’s house to talk to them, we can just text them or message them on Facebook. Dr. Martin Seligman, says that there has been a rise in depression over the years because of this distance. So here are some tips to help you stay social and be happy.
- Make time for family and friends. Schedule it on your calendar, take time off of work, or do whatever you have to do. Just do it.
- Surround yourself with optimistic people that love and care for you and contribute to your happiness, without contributing to your stress.
- Get off the electronics and spend time with people in person. Hug and smile with each other, we are energetic beings so this connection is important.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, our social connections with the wonderful people around us contribute to our happiness and well-being. Make time in your busy schedule to be with good people. After all, your happiness depends on it!
