This blog post is a visual meditation exercise in letting go of fear. Find a quiet space to practice this exercise where you won’t be interrupted for at least 5-10 minutes.
As always, I recommend that you journal about your experience after each practice for further exploration. Enjoy!
A Visual Meditation Exercise to Open The Doors to Happiness Without Fear
Imagine that your mind is a huge hallway full of doors. Some doors open freely, others are locked, and a few are boarded shut with a fire-breathing dragon guarding them.
Each of these doors has some story behind them.
The doors that open freely.
The lighter and easier stories are behind the doors that are open freely. When you open these doors, you feel comfortable and safe.
You could probably live your whole life only opening these doors, but it would be boring.
The doors that are locked.
The doors that are locked stay locked until you are ready to open them. The stories behind these doors hold hidden powers and talents that you might not have known you had like creativity, self-control, confidence, willpower, courage, and more. These locked doors also hold haunting thoughts too.
The keys to these locked doors are all around you and yet they are invisible to the scared eye. With an open and brave heart, you can find the keys and unlock only the doors you want, if you choose to do so.
The doors that are guarded by the dragon.
Then there are the doors guarded by the dragon. Nobody knows what stories are behind these doors because they have been shut tight for so long. The fiery dragon will throw flames at you if you attempt to open these doors.
Still, if you are clever, you can outsmart the dragon, break through the barrier, and open the doors. However, it will require that you have a strong faith in yourself.
You are the doorkeeper and you are in control of all the doors. You have the power to open and close the doors whenever you want if you choose to do so.
Now imagine that there is a way for you to see through all of the doors in a safe way, even the locked and guarded ones. You can look through each door with an observant eye.
Some doors open up to stories of fear, critical self-talk, and other negative emotions. Other doors will offer wisdom, hope, and inspiration.
Then there are the doors behind the dragon. With a safe and observant eye, you can see what lies behind these doors. Here you will find your greatest dreams and wishes being blocked by the dragon, which ultimately represents your fear.
Now that you know what is behind these doors, you can choose which ones to keep open or closed. After all, you are in control.
Now visualize yourself opening the doors that unlock your greatest powers and talents. Using those powers and talents, you can confront the dragon and break through the barriers to open the doors behind the dragon.
Imagine how amazing it feels to open these doors. You have now unlocked the doors to your authentic dreams and wishes. As you walk through these doors, you now have all the wisdom, courage, and faith to see, feel, touch, taste, and hear your dreams and wishes.
And the best part is that because you were brave enough to unlock these doors, you now have the knowledge to make these dreams and wishes come true if you choose to do so.
Final thoughts
In this journey of exploration that we are all in together, it is good to take time to look inward and reflect about where you are versus where you could be.
In closing, I’d like to leave you with some lovely words from Rumi:
Everything in the universe is within you. Ask all from yourself.
