What To Do When You Have the Unhappy Blues?

June 27, 2017

Happy thoughts lead to happy living. In efforts to keep this blog real, I like to say it like it is. I practice happiness everyday either through meditation, writing, spending time with people I love, finding flow, and a bunch of other things. Still, there are some days that are just unhappy. Gasp, the happiness coach gets the blues sometimes. Yup, I also get moody, grumpy, annoyed, and a host of other beautiful emotions.

Years ago, I used to live in these emotions for days and weeks without even knowing they were there. These days, my practice helps me to see my emotions and deal with them, if I choose to do so. This has been the most empowering part of my journey. I am no longer helpless to my emotions. Now, I am in control, when before I thought I wasn’t.

These days when I am unhappy or get the blues or other emotions, I stop, listen, and find out what is happening inside of me. I have learned that many things contribute to these emotional states. So it is important to be curious and figure out what is going on. After all, there are no good or bad emotions, there are just different emotions.

What To Do When You Have the Unhappy Blues?

Here are some questions to think about when you experiencing this state of “unhappiness”:

  1. Have you been sleeping well? Sleep is so important to our health and well-being, sometimes lack of sleep can open up a Pandora’s box of emotions. Get some more sleep or naps in and see if this changes your moods, feelings, and emotions (these are different things).
  1. Have you been eating well? Food can also mess with our emotions. Think back to you’re eating habits and see if you have been eating to much processed food or unhealthy snacks. If you see that this may be a problem, experiment with eliminating certain foods and see how things change.
  1. Have you been stressed? Are you more stressed then usual with something in your life? Are you avoiding this stress? If you said yes to this, then I recommend taking some time and writing out all your feelings in a journal. This is a very therapeutic process and it can help you discover any hidden emotions that you are not dealing with that might be causing you stress.
  1. Is something bothering you? So maybe it is not stress, but you have something that is bugging you and you don’t know what to do. If so, take some time to really reflect on your emotions through a quite meditation. And of course, afterwards write about your experience in your journal.
  1. Do you need to get help? A combination of these things (and so much more) can lead to the blues and unhappiness. If you find that you are experiencing the blues for a long time. I highly recommend that you seek help from a trained professional like a therapist or psychiatric. Staying in any low state for a long period of time can be dangerous, so get help. Also, while this blog may be helpful for you, it is not a substitute for treatment options. So please be safe and take care of yourself.

In my practice, I have learned that there are no good or bad emotions. Each emotion serves a purpose and has a message to tell us. It is important to be aware of our emotions so that we can co-exist with them in the present moment. Then we can return back to happiness.

Again, I want to be real about getting help. If you find that you are just struggling with the blues or prolonged unhappy states, please get help from a trained professional. Your mental health is very important, so please take care of yourself.

In closing, I’d like to share some wisdom from Eckhart Tolle about “unhappiness” from the book “A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose“:

Not all unhappiness is of the pain-body. Some of it is new unhappiness, created whenever you are out of alignment with the present moment, when the Now is denied in one way or another. When you recognize that the present moment is always already the case and therefore inevitable, you can bring an uncompromising inner “yes” to it and so not only create no further unhappiness, but, with inner resistance gone, find yourself empowered by Life itself.

Maribel Valls, MPH

Hey there, I'm Maribel Garcia Valls, and I'm all about vintage curation, room design, and graphic design. I've been obsessed with design ever since I was a kid, and I would always rearrange and style different spaces in my house. Thrift stores and garage sales are my jam, and I love discovering unique and eclectic pieces to add to my collection. When it comes to design, I'm all about pops of color and creating quirky and fun digital designs. I'm also a yoga and meditation teacher, and I use these tools as a way to express my creativity, along with journaling. While I have a Masters in Public Health and a Master's Certificate in Executive Coaching, my heart is always drawn to the more creative arts. For me, design is not just a hobby, it's a way of life. I believe that good design should be accessible to everyone, and I'm always on the lookout for inspiration in the world around me. Vintage curation, room design, writing, graphic design, and drawing are just a few of my passions, and I'm constantly exploring and expanding my skills with each new project. You can find my vintage booth at the Antique Gallery Round Rock: Booth C-22.
