The Life of Being a Mama Entrepreneur

April 2, 2016

queen bee-02Entrepreneurship is lifestyle where the world is your office and you set the bar for yourself. If you don’t do the work, you don’t get paid. And sometimes if you do the work, you still don’t get paid. But mama entrepreneurs don’t do it for the money, although making money is great. We do it for the thrill of making the world a better place with our services, products, and passions, while still being with our families.

There is a lot of sweat and effort to being a parent whether you are your own boss or working 9-5. The reason why I quit my 9-5 job was to be able to control my schedule better, spend more time with my family, and to have a job that I loved that gave me life purpose. Oh, and of course, I wanted to be happy. Now some mamas’ can find this same love in Corporate America and that’s great. However, that wasn’t how it happened for me. I felt stuck, overwhelmed, and underutilized. I had to get out and I’m glad I did. It took a lot of time, effort, patience, and lots of self-discovery to get my business to where it is today. But I have loved every minute of it.

There are no 9-5 hours in mama entrepreneurship. We do our work when we can, like when the kids are sleeping or at the playground. It beats having to deal with inflexible bosses who give you grief for calling in sick AGAIN when your kid throws up in the car on the way to school and work. Don’t get me wrong, not all bosses are bad or inflexible. But being your own boss is definitely better, at least that my opinion. Yes, being a mama entrepreneur is pretty amazing, but it’s not for everybody (check out my article on “Do You Have What it Takes to Be An Entrepreneur”).

That’s it for my short blog entry today, as I type at the jumpy place while my kids play. Keep working for what you want mamas’, whether it is entrepreneurship or the 9-5. You are not alone!

Maribel Valls, MPH

Hey there, I'm Maribel Garcia Valls, and I'm all about vintage curation, room design, and graphic design. I've been obsessed with design ever since I was a kid, and I would always rearrange and style different spaces in my house. Thrift stores and garage sales are my jam, and I love discovering unique and eclectic pieces to add to my collection. When it comes to design, I'm all about pops of color and creating quirky and fun digital designs. I'm also a yoga and meditation teacher, and I use these tools as a way to express my creativity, along with journaling. While I have a Masters in Public Health and a Master's Certificate in Executive Coaching, my heart is always drawn to the more creative arts. For me, design is not just a hobby, it's a way of life. I believe that good design should be accessible to everyone, and I'm always on the lookout for inspiration in the world around me. Vintage curation, room design, writing, graphic design, and drawing are just a few of my passions, and I'm constantly exploring and expanding my skills with each new project. You can find my vintage booth at the Antique Gallery Round Rock: Booth C-22.
