What Does Gratitude Really Mean And Why Is It So Important?

August 15, 2017

Happy thoughts lead to happy living. What is gratitude? Gratitude is being out in the desert for 6 days with limited water and then it rains. Each drop of water is magical and magnificent. And there is nothing else but sheer appreciation for each moment in the rain. That’s gratitude. Really appreciating what you have.

Not complaining that the rain didn’t come with a cheeseburger. Just appreciating the rain!

These days the word “gratitude” has become a buzzword, just like “happiness.” Everybody wants to do it and be it, but struggle to understand it. The act of gratitude takes some deep thought and consideration. The superficial “thank you” is just not enough to reap the true benefits of gratitude.

Gratitude gives us the ability to see the world in a different light. Instead of complaining about what you don’t have, you can appreciate what you’ve got.

The power of gratitude lies in the ability to really let go of any expectations and be present in the moment. This takes practice and conditioning of the mental muscles of gratitude.

Bee Happi, Be Happy

Here is a quick meditation and journal exercise for gratitude:

  1. Find a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted for 5 minutes.
  2. Write down three things that you are grateful for in your life in your journal.
  3. Circle one of these things to focus on during this practice.
  4. Sit down or lie down and close your eyes.
  5. Hold your thumb and index finger together on your laps.
  6. Inhale with a deep breath and hold it.
  7. Let it all out.
  8. Exhale with a deep breath and hold it.
  9. Let it all out.
  10. Repeat for 5 cycles.
  11. Think of something in your life that makes you feel truly grateful.
  12. Let it feeling of gratitude fill your heart for five breaths.
  13. When you are ready, open your eyes and enjoy this moment of gratitude.
  14. Journal about your experience.

Final Thoughts

Conditioning the mind to feel authentic gratitude takes practice. Do this exercise when you want to experience more gratitude in your life. With true gratitude in life, comes an openness to experience more and thus a richer life with happiness, abundance, and prosperity.

Maribel Valls, MPH

Hey there, I'm Maribel Garcia Valls, and I'm all about vintage curation, room design, and graphic design. I've been obsessed with design ever since I was a kid, and I would always rearrange and style different spaces in my house. Thrift stores and garage sales are my jam, and I love discovering unique and eclectic pieces to add to my collection. When it comes to design, I'm all about pops of color and creating quirky and fun digital designs. I'm also a yoga and meditation teacher, and I use these tools as a way to express my creativity, along with journaling. While I have a Masters in Public Health and a Master's Certificate in Executive Coaching, my heart is always drawn to the more creative arts. For me, design is not just a hobby, it's a way of life. I believe that good design should be accessible to everyone, and I'm always on the lookout for inspiration in the world around me. Vintage curation, room design, writing, graphic design, and drawing are just a few of my passions, and I'm constantly exploring and expanding my skills with each new project. You can find my vintage booth at the Antique Gallery Round Rock: Booth C-22.
