The Magic of Vintage Pieces: Add Texture and Whimsy to Your Design Spaces
Hey there, fellow vintage enthusiasts! Are you tired of home decor that lacks character and personality? Well, fear not, my friends, because I’m here to help you spice things up with some vintage pieces! Adding your vintage finds can give your living spaces a touch of charm and surprise that new items can’t replicate. So, let’s dive in and explore these easy design elements you can use to incorporate vintage pieces into your home decor.
Textiles: The Perfect Way to Add Texture and Interest
Window treatments: Drapes and blinds can add color and pattern to a room while providing privacy and light control. Add a touch of whimsy by adding vintage curtains to any room. Look for curtains made from natural fibers like cotton or linen for a classic vintage look.
Mixing and matching patterns and colors can create a truly unique style. There are many ways to hang curtains. Using long curtain panels, hanging them 4-6 inches above the window frame helps the ceiling look taller and makes a room feel more spacious.
The other option is to hang the curtains low, closer to the window frame, or above it, which helps the room feel cozier and more intimate. Whichever method you choose, be consistent throughout your spaces so the design can flow better.
Upholstery: Using vintage textiles to upholster chairs, sofas, and other furniture will add color and texture to any piece. It’s a great way to refresh current or vintage items with a new look and a vintage touch.
Throw pillows and blankets: I love pillows. You can change them seasonally to refresh your spaces. Pillows add pops of color and texture to a room while making it more comfortable and inviting. Throw blankets have a similar effect as pillows and add coziness to your design spaces. You can buy pillows and throw blankets at thrift stores for cheap.
Area rugs: A rug can anchor the space by blending colors and patterns. Look for rugs made from natural fibers like wool or cotton for durability. A little wear and tear can actually add character and history to your rug, so don’t be afraid to embrace imperfections. Rugs can be expensive, but they can be found cheaper at thrift shops or online marketplaces. I have had great luck finding incredible high-end rugs for less than eight dollars at some thrift stores.
Vintage Fabrics: I love vintage fabrics. The sky is the limit with this textile. Fabrics are a great way to add texture and interest to your space. You can use vintage tablecloths to add color to a vintage table or use fabrics for projects like pillow covers, napkins, or drapes. Think outside the box and repurpose old linens into something new and functional.
Art: Make a Statement with Vintage Prints and Paintings
Vintage paintings, posters, and prints are a bold way to give character to your walls. Art pieces can come from anything. For instance, we found a vintage wood printing press drawer and hung it on the wall. As a graphic designer, this piece was a perfect way to celebrate my craft’s history. Hanging maps, flags, letters, postcards, or practically anything, can creatively help tell your story in your design space. When using vintage pieces, the possibilities are endless. Also, lighting can be an art statement with different light fixtures and lamps.

Furniture: Mix and Match for a Unique Look
Mixing vintage pieces with new furniture can create an eclectic and visually exciting space. Look for vintage chairs, tables, or dressers to charm your room. Don’t worry about matching everything perfectly. Embracing different styles and eras can add depth and character to your space. Again, you can find these pieces by going to thrift stores, flea markets, or shopping on the marketplace to save money. I have even seen many incredible pieces on the side of the road for free.
A VINTAGE-DESIGNED Room
Now, let me show you an example (using the blog photo above) of how easy it is to incorporate vintage pieces into your home decor. Here is a cozy sitting area with white shiplap walls, a brown leather sofa, a white coffee table, and two vintage chairs from the 60s. On the side, an A-frame shelf displays games and vintage decor. The window treatment features vintage-looking curtains made from cotton fabric. A wooden bench with a big throw pillow and a mountain photograph add warmth and personality to the hallway. And on the floor, a blue boho carpet ties the space together perfectly.
Some Parting Thoughts
So, there you have it, folks! Incorporating vintage pieces into your home decor is easier than you think. Whether adding a vintage rug, repurposing old linens, or mixing vintage furniture with new pieces, these elements will help you create a unique, personalized space that tells a story. Let your creativity run wild and experiment with different styles and eras.
But before you start, the first thing I always recommend before styling any space is to create a mood board. Get inspiration for what you’d like to buy and make a wishlist. It’s also good to sketch out the space and see where you’d like everything to go. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Doing this will help you have a clear plan for implementing these vintage design pieces. Finding all the vintage items you seek may take some time, so keep your list handy.
Happy decorating!

Hey there, I'm Maribel Garcia Valls, and I'm all about vintage curation, room design, and graphic design. I've been obsessed with design ever since I was a kid, and I would always rearrange and style different spaces in my house. Thrift stores and garage sales are my jam, and I love discovering unique and eclectic pieces to add to my collection. When it comes to design, I'm all about pops of color and creating quirky and fun digital designs. I'm also a yoga and meditation teacher, and I use these tools as a way to express my creativity, along with journaling. While I have a Masters in Public Health and a Master's Certificate in Executive Coaching, my heart is always drawn to the more creative arts. For me, design is not just a hobby, it's a way of life. I believe that good design should be accessible to everyone, and I'm always on the lookout for inspiration in the world around me. Vintage curation, room design, writing, graphic design, and drawing are just a few of my passions, and I'm constantly exploring and expanding my skills with each new project.
