Hey there! It’s me, your favorite vintage curator, here to spill the beans on what it’s really like to do this labor of love. Vintage curating is all about the thrill of the hunt – finding those one-of-a-kind pieces that take you back to another time in a good way. It’s about taking something old and making it new again, giving it a new lease on life.
But vintage curating is more than just hunting for treasure. A curator has experience understanding the market and knowing what’s hot and what’s not. They also know how important restoring items to their former glory is and pricing them fairly for both the customer and the curator. In other words, a vintage curator does all the hard work, so you don’t have to.
So, what exactly is vintage curating, you ask? Let’s dive into that question, shall we?
What is Vintage Curating?
Well, it’s a lot of things. Vintage curating is like being a detective but with an eye for style. It’s about sourcing vintage items by scouring flea markets, estate sales, and thrift stores to find the best pieces. Then there is researching the history behind each item, learning about the era it came from, and understanding its value.
After the research comes lots of cleaning and restoring items, making them shine like new. Pricing and styling happen next, presenting the items in a way that’s appealing to customers, whether in a physical booth or an online shop. Of course, then there is the marketing and all the little business details. And finally, the best part — sharing these unique items with people who appreciate their beauty and history.
But why should you care about vintage curating? Well, for vintage customers, having someone search and dig for items that are hard to find is a gift. I always say that curating is like the idiom, “you don’t want to see how the sausage is made,” meaning it’s a lot of leg work and time to curate.
What Can You Expect to Find from a Vintage Curator?
Each vintage curator has their specialty, but you can expect to find items that are beautiful, unique, and full of history. In my booth, I love selling quirky books, brass items, and industrial chic pieces. Other curators might specialize in vintage clothing, mid-century modern furniture, or antique jewelry. Whatever their focus, you can be sure that each item is high quality and was chosen with care and attention to detail. You’re not just buying a random piece off the internet – you’re getting something specifically picked for its beauty, history, and uniqueness.
The Difference Between Curating and a LEISURELY Vintage Shopping Day
Now, I know what you might be thinking – can’t I just go vintage hunting myself? Well, of course, you can! But there are some key differences between vintage hunting and a fun afternoon shopping with some friends. For one, vintage hunting can be messy and more like a workout. You might have to spend hours digging through piles of junk to find that one hidden gem. And even if you do find something you love, it might need a lot of work to restore it to its former glory. And for sure, you’ll want to take a long shower afterward and wash your digging clothes.
Shopping at a vintage booth, on the other hand, is more like a curated shopping experience. You can browse carefully selected items in a clean, well-lit environment without getting your hands dirty or breaking a sweat.
Some Parting Thoughts
Being a vintage curator is more than just a job – it’s a passion. A vintage curator has a love for finding and sharing those hidden gems with people who appreciate their beauty and history. So next time you’re in the market for a unique vintage piece, skip the messy vintage hunting and head straight to a vintage booth. Trust me, your wallet (and your sanity) will thank you!

Maribel Valls, MPH
Hey there, I'm Maribel Garcia Valls, and I'm all about vintage curation, room design, and graphic design. I've been obsessed with design ever since I was a kid, and I would always rearrange and style different spaces in my house. Thrift stores and garage sales are my jam, and I love discovering unique and eclectic pieces to add to my collection. When it comes to design, I'm all about pops of color and creating quirky and fun digital designs. I'm also a yoga and meditation teacher, and I use these tools as a way to express my creativity, along with journaling. While I have a Masters in Public Health and a Master's Certificate in Executive Coaching, my heart is always drawn to the more creative arts. For me, design is not just a hobby, it's a way of life. I believe that good design should be accessible to everyone, and I'm always on the lookout for inspiration in the world around me. Vintage curation, room design, writing, graphic design, and drawing are just a few of my passions, and I'm constantly exploring and expanding my skills with each new project. You can find my vintage booth at the Antique Gallery Round Rock: Booth C-22.
