THE STORY BEFORE OUR STORY
The story began a few years ago when my husband deployed to Afghanistan with the military. At the time we had a six-year-old little boy and baby on the way. The time flew by pretty quickly (at least, now it feels that way). That year, I discovered lots of things about life, love, patience, hope, and forgiveness.
The biggest thing I learned was how to listen to my breath. That sounds pretty simple, but it is truly profound and it changed my whole life! My world was so noisy was family, work, life, and no balance. I was going, going, going, and never got anywhere. The moments were passing me by and I was missing them all.
I began practicing meditation and journaling, which opened up a Pandora’s box of all sorts of emotions, feelings, creativity, and new energy. It was like I was a whole new person. Now this didn’t happen overnight, it was definitely a slow gradual process. The more I practiced, the more I was in tune with the real me, who was excited to come out.
The new me decided to quit my existing job and follow my passions. At the time I wasn’t clear about my path, I just knew I wanted to change. I used meditation and journaling to give me answers about my direction and discovered what I really wanted to do was start my own business. So that’s what I did!
Starting a business was like climbing a mountain blindfolded. It was so freaking hard! Many days I thought to myself, “Is this really what I am supposed to be doing?” The answer was always “hell yeah!” So I kept going, growing, learning, failing, and getting back up. Sometimes all in the same day! Again, I reached out to meditation and journaling for my emotional rescue.
Two years after starting my business, I got pregnant again. I wanted to be happy and for some reason, I could never get there. I was stuck at this low emotional state and I needed help. I went to my doctor and she offered to put me on some medication and I said “no thanks!” Then I went to see an acupuncturist and learned how to get myself out of these low states by changing the way I think.
At four months of pregnancy, I miscarried and started to experience post partum depression! Holy crap, it was an emotional roller coaster with a mean conductor! There were days were I couldn’t get up. I turned to a friend that I knew I could trust, my journal! I wrote everything down, the good, the bad, and ugly! I also practiced my meditation daily and continued the acupuncture. Slowly, I began to heal mentally and physically.
Around this time, I began learning more about Neuro-lingustic Programming (NLP), which helped me to dig into my unconscious thoughts to learn more about my emotional patterns. Through this practice, I learned how to rewire my thoughts and feelings to my benefit. In the process, I let go of limiting beliefs that had haunted me for years. I replaced these beliefs with new resourceful feelings and thoughts of positivity, bravery, confidence, faith, and happiness. For the first time in months, I felt normal again. And it felt great to just bee happi. The meditation, journaling, acupuncture, and NLP helped me change my life.
THE BEE HAPPI STORY
Now here is the part of the story that you have been waiting for! How did Bee Happi start? A few weeks later from the events above, I woke up and I had these words were in my head, just bee happi. I wrote them down and then continued on with my day. The next day during my meditation practice, these words showed up again…just bee happi. Later that day as I was journaling, I thought to myself “wouldn’t it be cool to have a business about happiness!” The more and more I thought about it, the more the ideas kept pouring into my journal. I knew a lot about happiness from studying Positive Psychology, NLP, meditation, and journaling, so why not? So I started making a plan.
The next week, my husband discovered a HUGE swarm of bees on our roof! And I mean huge, like 7,000 plus bees inside the exterior of my house. We called this bee expert to come get them out and put them in better place! Apparently, the bees had been there since June and it was already October! There were seven huge honeycombs in my house and we never knew about it! Talk about a living metaphor! I asked the bee expert, “How can you ensure that the bees are really gone”. He said, “I removed the Queen and the other bees can’t survive without her.”
At that moment, a light bulb went off! Things were starting to come together. The play on words with the “bee happi” came before we discovered the bees in our house. I felt like this was a sign from the universe. So I asked myself “what can we learn from the Queen Bee?” First of all, the Queen Bee has a huge responsibly to her community, without her, there is “no them!” This means that she has to maintain her health and well-being. How does she do that? She asks for help! AND the community helps her, no questions asked! Wow, what a concept (in my sarcastic, but happi tone)! It’s like they tell you on an airplane, “put your mask on first, then you can help others!” Seriously, this is the best advice ever!
I wanted to model the Queen Bee concept and create a community where people could give and receive from each other, no questions asked. A place where happiness is not about being “selfish”, it’s about being alive! That’s why we put an “I” instead of a “Y” in happiness, because it’s okay if “I” want to be happy, and it doesn’t matter “why”! That’s the story behind “Bee Happi” and the rest is history!
