STORY BEHIND THE CREATIVE
Hey there, lovelies! It’s Maribel Garcia Valls, a Latina Vintage Curator and Graphic Designer! I’ve always been passionate about design, and my creative journey has been anything but boring.
It took me a whole lot of schooling and four degrees to finally find my calling. But hey, it was all worth it in the end! As a kid, I was always rearranging my furniture, jamming out to my favorite tunes, and designing spaces even before I knew design was a thing.
And as an adult, I turned to journaling, yoga, and meditation to tap into my creative side. And boy, did I tap into it! I dove deep into the world of design, devouring all the information I could get my hands on. I taught myself graphic design, illustration, and space design, obsessing over styles, textures, colors, and textiles. And you know what? I loved every minute of it!
I’m all about bright colors and clean lines. My inspiration comes from all around me – the colors of a 1970s advertisement, the patterns on a vintage couch, and the font on a vintage Loteria bingo card. I’m known to spend months working on a project until I reach my happy point, and my style is all about feminine minimalism with a touch of whimsy.
My mom, she was the queen of garage sales, a true champion of selling anything and everything. I mean, seriously, she was unstoppable! One of her specialties was curating jewelry, and let me tell you, she was absolutely amazing at it. She would go to different resale shops and find the most exquisite pieces. She knew how to buy low and sell high, always making a profit. And she did her research too, she knew which pieces were truly valuable.
So, I’ve grown up and started to explore the world of treasure hunting. And let me tell you, some of the best pieces in my home are secondhand gems.
The thrill of the hunt is something I can’t resist, which is why I decided to become a vintage curator, following in my Mom’s footsteps. Vintage space design fascinates me, and I’m always learning something new every day.
You know what I always say? “You can make anything look good.” And it’s true! People often see things on the side of the road and think it’s trash, but in my mind, I’ve already come up with like 10 different ways to use the piece.
Sometimes I go into other people’s homes and rearrange all their stuff in my mind. Same thing for graphic design – I’ll see a logo or a website and come up with ideas on how I could improve it with a feminine and quirky design touch. It’s just the way my mind works, and I love it.
And don’t even get me started on education! I’ve been hitting the books since before I could even hit a piñata. I’ve got a Master’s in Public Health & Management from A&M School of Public Health and a Master’s Certificate in Executive Coaching & Management from the University of Texas at Dallas. And on top of that, I’m a certified Kundalini Meditation teacher and even wrote a few books on the subject.
I’m here to inspire others to unleash their creativity and find their own paths. I’m excited to share my unique gifts and bring a breath of fresh air to the vintage design scene. Alright then, let’s get those creative juices flowing! The enchanting world of vintage design is eagerly waiting for us to explore and create some magic together.
